We switched a line to fixed readers at two choke points and kept a single handheld for rework; reads went 92%→99% after we reduced antenna power and added a $30 shield — “fixed tells you where, handheld tells you why” (RFID is like Wi‑Fi: placement beats power). For small lots we skip AQL tables and use c=0 or 100% on CTQs during pilot, but handheld-only can be fine if you’ve got barcode fallback and spare batteries.
But fixed readers paid off for us once we set an RSSI floor around -55 dBm and turned on Dense Reader Mode; at about 0.8 m/s conveyor speed we still hit near-100% in a 75 ms window. @aaron_j92’s “read angle” point holds — cant the antenna about 15° and wire GPIO to pause the lane on a miss. Caveat: if you’ve got welders or VFD noise near the cell, keep a handheld as a fallback during those cycles.
Quick example: our biggest bump came from enabling a 120 ms tag-visibility filter and locking inventory to Session 2; it killed double-reads at pack-out without slowing the line. For smaller AQL lots, one handheld per cell plus a strip of EMI absorber tape (~$12 roll) around the bin lip kept stray captures near zero. @ethan_l81’s RSSI floor call is solid, but in crowded fields auto-Q underperformed — “fixed Q=3” was steadier.
