We switched two weld cells from foot pedal to “two-hand control” and, , the extra 0.3s per cycle hurt, but near-misses dropped to zero; adding a heel guard on the remaining pedal line cut false hits by half. Try a one-week A/B with an anti-tie-down relay, log near-misses per 1,000 cycles and tie it to QC/labeling scrap, then decide per cell. Split the difference: use bimanual for normal cycles, but allow a guarded pedal only in setup via a keyed mode switch and trapped key, enforced by the safety PLC at reduced speed. @aharris, have you tried that kind of mode control?
